一九二四年的北平，寒风凛冽。一个妓女带着她年幼的儿子小豆子来到关师傅的京剧戏班。小豆子天生多了一根手指，关师傅认为这是不祥之兆，拒绝收他。为了让儿子有出路，母亲狠下心来，用刀砍掉了他多余的那根手指。

In the bitter cold of 1924 Beijing, a prostitute brought her young son, Little Douzi, to Master Guan's Peking Opera troupe. Little Douzi was born with an extra finger, which Master Guan deemed an ominous sign and refused to accept him. In a desperate bid to secure a future for her son, the mother resolutely took a knife and severed the extra finger.

小豆子被留在了戏班，开始了艰苦的学艺生涯。在这里，他遇到了比他大几岁的小石头。小石头性格豪爽，经常保护被其他孩子欺负的小豆子。两个孩子在这残酷的环境中建立了深厚的友谊。

Little Douzi was left in the troupe, embarking on a grueling journey of learning the craft. There, he met the slightly older Little Shitou. With a bold and generous spirit, Little Shitou often protected Little Douzi from the bullying of other children. Amidst this harsh environment, the two boys forged a deep friendship.

戏班的训练极其严格。孩子们每天天不亮就要起床练功，稍有懈怠就会遭到师傅的毒打。小豆子因为性格柔弱，被安排学习旦角，也就是扮演女性角色。小石头则学习生角，扮演男性英雄人物。

The training in the troupe was exceedingly strict. Each day, the children rose before dawn to practice, and any sign of slackness would result in severe punishment from the master. Due to his gentle nature, Little Douzi was assigned to learn the dan role, portraying female characters, while Little Shitou took on the sheng role, embodying male heroes.

小豆子在背诵一段经典台词时总是出错。这段台词是《思凡》中的词："我本是女娇娥，又不是男儿郎。"他总是说成"我本是男儿郎，又不是女娇娥。"师傅为此狠狠地打他，但他就是改不过来。

Whenever Little Douzi recited a classic line, he always stumbled. The line was from "Si Fan": "I am but a delicate girl, not a manly lad." He consistently misquoted it as, "I am but a manly lad, not a delicate girl." The master beat him mercilessly for this mistake, yet he could not seem to correct it.

终于有一天，小石头用烟袋锅子打了小豆子的嘴。小豆子满嘴是血，但从那以后，他终于能正确地念出那句词了。从那一刻起，小豆子似乎真正接受了自己要扮演女人的命运。

Finally, one day, Little Shitou struck Little Douzi's mouth with a pipe. With blood filling his mouth, Little Douzi, from that moment on, was finally able to recite the line correctly. It was as if he had truly accepted his fate to portray a woman.

有一次，小豆子和另一个孩子小癞子趁师傅不注意逃出了戏班。他们在街上流浪，看到一场豪华的京剧演出。台上的名角光彩照人，台下观众如痴如醉。小豆子被深深震撼了，他第一次理解了京剧艺术的魅力。

One time, Little Douzi and another child, Little Laizi, escaped the troupe while the master was not paying attention. They wandered the streets and witnessed a lavish Peking Opera performance. The stars on stage shone brilliantly, while the audience below was entranced. Little Douzi was profoundly shaken; for the first time, he understood the allure of Peking Opera.

那晚，小癞子不愿回去受苦，选择了上吊自尽。小豆子却做出了不同的选择。他回到戏班，告诉小石头："他们怎么成的角儿？得挨多少打呀？我什么时候才能成角儿啊？"从此，他下定决心要成为最好的旦角演员。

That night, Little Laizi, unwilling to return to suffering, chose to hang himself. Little Douzi, however, made a different choice. He returned to the troupe and told Little Shitou, "How did they become stars? How many beatings did they endure? When will I become a star?" From that moment on, he resolved to become the best dan actor.
